Krytycy spierają się, czy to właśnie „Ah Um”, czy raczej „The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady” jest definitywnym albumem Mingusa. Pewne jest, że to nagranie z 1959 roku przedstawia Mingusa – basistę o stosunkowo prostym stylu – jako kompozytora i lidera. Poszczególne utwory są bardzo zróżnicowane, a mimo to zawsze przystępne. Z „Better Git it in Your Soul”, utworem inspirowanym gospelem otwierającym album, „Goodbye Pork Pie Hat”, powolnym hołdem dla niedawno zmarłego Lestera Younga, oraz „Fables of Faubus”, muzyczną parodią gubernatora stanu Arkansas, aż trzy utwory stały się klasykami jazzu.
